529 Foreign-Trained Doctors Fail Nigerian Medical Exam

Cursory: The MDCN conducted an assessment exam for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates, with a 27.4% pass rate. The exam is mandatory for foreign-trained doctors intending to practice in Nigeria, upholding healthcare standards and safeguarding the health of Nigerians.

As per the examination report obtained from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) on Sunday, a total of 529 foreign-trained medical and dental graduates did not pass the assessment examination.

The assessment took place over two days, on July 12 and July 13, 2023, at the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Out of the 704 medical and 30 dental foreign-trained graduates who participated in the assessment examination, only 189 medical graduates and 16 dental graduates were successful in passing.

The remaining 515 medical graduates and 14 dental graduates did not meet the required standard to pass the examination.

The MDCN is responsible for overseeing the practice of Medicine, Dentistry, and Alternative Medicine in Nigeria, ensuring the protection of the nation’s healthcare system.

According to reports from The PUNCH, the MDCN assessment examination is mandatory for all foreign-trained doctors intending to practice in Nigeria. This examination evaluates candidates’ ability to apply their knowledge of basic medical sciences and clinical skills within a healthcare setting.

Dr. Tajudeen Sanusi, the Registrar of MDCN, commented on the examination results, expressing concern over the pass rate, which stands at 27.4%. He emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in healthcare delivery to safeguard the health of Nigerian citizens.

The pass is at 27.4 per cent, which is poor. However, the assessment exam is necessary because we cannot put the health of Nigerians in jeopardy; it is better we have a few doctors than have doctors that will put the health of Nigerians in danger. All hands must be on deck to put this country in the right place.

– Dr. Sanusi.

Dr. Sanusi highlighted that similar assessment exams are standard practice worldwide when medical practitioners seek to practice in different jurisdictions.

It’s a global practice that if you train in a particular jurisdiction and, you want to go to another jurisdiction, you subject yourself to an assessment exam. Even if you are a professor of medicine here and you’ve never practised in the United Kingdom or the United States, when you go there, you subject yourself to their assessment exam. So, it’s a global practice” .

Dr. Sanusi

The council remains committed to upholding stringent standards to ensure the competence and quality of healthcare practitioners in Nigeria.
