Flood Submerges University of Ibadan’s Awo Hostel, Damages Students’ Belongings

Flooding at the University of Ibadan’s Awo Hostel submerged 16 rooms, destroying students’ belongings, including documents, food, and laptops, leaving many struggling to salvage their possessions.

Flooding has severely impacted the University of Ibadan, with Awo Hostel being the hardest hit. According to Sahara Reporters, approximately 16 rooms on the hostel’s underground floor were completely submerged, leaving students’ belongings floating in the water.

Among the damaged items were important documents, books, food supplies, laptops, and other valuable possessions. “This is the third time we’ve experienced flooding, but it’s the first time it has affected our rooms like this,” said one student, who expressed shock at the extent of the damage.

Many students who were away at exams returned to find their belongings destroyed. “People’s foodstuffs, documents, and properties were ruined. One student even left her laptop charging on the floor, only to return and find it submerged,” another student recounted.

One female student voiced her distress, explaining that the flood had taken over her room and destroyed everything, including items stored in her cupboard and on her bed. She added that she had been unable to leave the hostel to buy food due to the disaster.

The incident marks a significant challenge for the students, particularly as they prepare for their examinations, with many losing essential resources and personal items.
