Meet Hajiya Hassu, the ABUsite who was declared as the First Female Degree Graduate in Katsina State

Hajiya Hassu Iro Inko was Ahmadu Bello University alumni, she was known as educationist, and a teacher during her lifetime in Katsina. She was declared as the first female Degree Graduate on Katsina in 90’s.

Hajiya Hassu Iro Inko was Born in November 10 1936, in kankia town inside katsina. She first attended elementary education in Mani (1942-44). And then she further her studies at Federal School katsina (1944). Then she travels outside town to further with her Secondary School studies at Government Girls Schools Sokoto (1945). Middle School katsina (1946-47). Then she further her studies at Governing Girls School Kano (1947-49).

She proceeded to Women Teachers College Kano (1950-51). She was at the Advanced teachers’ College Zaria from 1969-71 for the National Certificate in Education course, In 1972.

She obtained a Diploma at the Institute of Education ABU Zaria, between 1971 and 1972 she studied at the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria where she obtained a Bachelor’s degree in education thus becoming the first female graduate in Katsina State. She also studied at the Nottingham University England (1972-73).

Hajiya Hassu Iro Inko started her career as an assistant teacher at practicing school Katsina from1952-54. Teacher at Provincial girls’ college, Katsina between 1954 – 1964; Headmistress, Girls Day primary school, Katsina, 1965-69; Principal, Women Teachers’ College, Katsina, 1973-1976; Principal, Women Teachers’ College, Kabomo, 1976.

She was the Federal Electoral Commissioner for Lagos (1976-78), Minna (1979), Abuja (1980-82) and Kano (1983).

After her time at the federal Electoral Commission Hajiya Hassu Iro Inko returned back to education where she was appointed the Chief Inspector of Education, Zonal Inspectorate of Education, Katsina state from 1984 to 1987 and later Chief Education Officer (women) at the state Ministry of Education 1988 and one-time Chairperson of Dutsinma and Rimi Local Governments.

She was very active in women societies where she served at various times as President (katsina chapter) of the Northern Women Association and Amira Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria etc

She was the recipient of various awards including a member of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 1998, National Merit Award by National Council of Women Societies (1996), and Merit Award by Gidauniyar Jihaar Katsina. She died in 2005.
