A Nigerian mother criticized the trend of extravagant school birthday gifts after her children received costly items, warning that it creates pressure on other parents and turns schools into a competition ground instead of a place for learning.

A Nigerian mother has sparked reactions online after expressing concern about the growing trend of extravagant birthday celebrations in schools. In a video that went viral, she lamented that what should be simple celebrations have turned into displays of wealth.
According to her, her children recently returned home with expensive gifts, including a bicycle and a bag filled with items, given out by a classmate celebrating a birthday. She questioned the need for such costly gestures, noting that they create unnecessary pressure on other parents to match the same level of spending.
The mother emphasized that not all families have the same financial capacity, and expecting others to reciprocate such expensive gifts is unrealistic. She argued that schools should remain focused on learning, not competition or social comparison among parents.
She further advised that birthday celebrations should be kept within families rather than turned into public displays at school. Calling on both parents and private school authorities, she urged them to set boundaries and discourage excessive gifting, stressing that school should not become a platform for showing off wealth.
