Inioluwa Afolabi, a mother and recipient of the MasterCard scholarship, has successfully completed her master’s degree at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Additionally, she has been granted the Gates scholarship to pursue her Ph.D. at the same institution.
Originally from Nigeria, Inioluwa earned her bachelor’s degree in Pure and Applied Chemistry from Ladoke Akintola University before relocating to the United Kingdom for her postgraduate studies.
Reflecting on her accomplishment on LinkedIn, Inioluwa expressed her joy in celebrating a victory that once seemed unattainable. She described her journey to Cambridge as one of breakthroughs, as she initially had doubts about her ability to attend such a prestigious university, especially given the financial constraints and the challenges of being a student and a mother.
However, driven by her determination to pursue her passions rather than settle for casual employment as a new immigrant, Inioluwa’s path to Cambridge was ignited by desperation.
Despite initial reservations about the accessibility of scholarships for international students, she came across the Gates Cambridge scholarship advertisement, which shattered her preconceived notions about Cambridge being beyond her reach.
Although initially enrolled without funding, Inioluwa’s fortunes changed when she was awarded the Mastercard Foundation scholarship, becoming one of the pioneering cohorts of the program at the university.
This scholarship opened up a realm of endless possibilities for her. She completed her Master of Philosophy in Chemistry at the University of Cambridge and subsequently received the Gates Cambridge scholarship for her Ph.D., along with two other prestigious scholarships.
Inioluwa’s academic achievements also include winning the 2023 Outstanding Postgraduate Student Cambridge Africa award. Notably, she was selected as a student speaker at the 25th anniversary of the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors and successfully defended her thesis with no corrections.
