The MTN Foundation has announced that it has invested approximately N3 billion in scholarships for disadvantaged undergraduate students and students with disabilities in Nigeria.
The Director of the Foundation, Reginald Okeya, made this revelation during the Scholarship Award ceremony held in Port Harcourt.
He explained that this funding is part of the company’s corporate social investment program, which has been in operation for over a decade.
Annually, the MTN Foundation allocates a specific fund for scholarships aimed at supporting financially disadvantaged undergraduate students, including those with visual impairments and other disabilities.
This scholarship program is divided into groups, and the current batch includes more than 300 undergraduate students majoring in science disciplines, encompassing visually impaired and physically challenged undergraduates.
In his words:
“Every year, the foundation sets aside a certain amount of money for scholarship funding for the less privileged, the blind and other students living with disabilities.
“The programme is segmented into batches, today’s batch captured over 300 undergraduate science students, including the blind and other physically impaired undergraduates.”
Each scholarship recipient receives a total of N200,000 per semester. This financial support continues throughout their academic journey as long as they maintain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.4 in their respective fields of study until they graduate.
“The total scholarship package is the sum of N200,000 per semester for each of the beneficiaries.
“Beneficiaries continue to get the money, as long as they maintain a minimum standard Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.4. in their respective field of study until graduation,” he added.
He encouraged them to make the most of the scholarship to improve their own lives and contribute positively to society. He also emphasized the importance of avoiding activities that could derail their academic progress.
On another note, Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedum Mmon, commended MTN for its support to the less privileged and vulnerable students.
He was represented by Emmanuel Olomo, Director of Quality Assurance, who urged the scholarship recipients to view themselves as special candidates who have successfully met the scholarship requirements.
He advised them to seize this opportunity to build a promising career path. Some of the scholarship recipients expressed their gratitude to the foundation and pledged to continue exploring the various opportunities provided by it.
Dignitaries present at the event included Prof. Nlerum Okogbule, the Vice Chancellor of Rivers State University, and a representative from the University of Port Harcourt. The event was covered by NAN.
