The call for applications for Chevening Scholarships to pursue studies in the United Kingdom (UK) opened on September 12, 2023, and will continue until November 7, 2023. Interested candidates should submit their applications through the online application portal at chevening.org/apply.
These scholarships are part of a global scholarship initiative funded by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), in collaboration with partner organizations.
These scholarships provide support for individuals to pursue one-year taught Master’s programs at universities in the UK. They are intended for individuals who show clear potential to become future leaders, decision-makers, and influential figures.
The British High Commission in Nigeria shared this information through a statement signed by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer.
The announcement of the call for new applicants follows the selection of 44 scholars from Nigeria who received awards to study at UK universities this year.
Emma Hennessey, the Head of Scholarships at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, emphasized that Chevening Scholars, Fellows, and Alumni leverage the skills and knowledge gained during their UK studies to drive positive change, fostering better lives and safer communities globally.
Chevening represents the excellence of the UK and the world, with scholars joining the global network of over 55,000 alumni. Emma Hennessey expressed her inspiration from the passion and dedication of the Chevening community and eagerly anticipates applications from the next generation of scholars.
“Chevening Scholars, Fellows, and Alumni use the skills and knowledge they gain while studying in the UK to drive change, promoting better lives and safer places for people around the world to live, work, and thrive” she said.
“Chevening represents the very best of the UK and the world, and our scholars become part of the global Chevening network of over 55,000 alumni. I am always inspired by the passion and commitment of those in the Chevening community and I look forward to receiving applications from the next generation,” she added.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, said: “If you are someone who is passionate about driving change, whether on a local or global scale, if you want to be the best at what you do and if you have the imagination to inspire others, then a Chevening Scholarship could be the perfect opportunity for you.
“There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ scholar. Your age, race, gender, religion, and cultural background do not matter to us. We want to see that you have energy, curiosity, compassion a clear vision for your future and the ability to achieve your goals.
“Our alumni network is full of dynamic influencers who have shared the same experience that you will. They can offer encouragement, mentorship, advice, and contacts. When you return home after your studies you should feel well-equipped to start making a real difference in Nigeria.”
Joseph Ugwu, a Nigerian Chevening Scholar for 2023, highlighted that the scholarship provides a wide range of remarkable advantages, some of which are beyond monetary value and cannot be obtained elsewhere. These benefits include the chance to join an exclusive, authentic, and worldwide community of influential leaders.
