Ikanna Okim, a remarkable Nigerian woman, broke a 36-year record at the University of Uyo by graduating with a first-class law degree, and has since secured a full scholarship to study for a Bachelor of Civil Law at Oxford University.

Ikanna Okim, an outstanding Nigerian woman, has etched her name in history at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) by becoming the first student in 36 years to graduate with a first-class Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree.
This remarkable achievement stemmed from Ikanna’s stellar academic performance in 2020, after which she continued to excel at the Nigerian Law School.
At Law School, she maintained her impressive track record, graduating with first-class honors and obtaining her qualification as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Reflecting on her academic journey, Ikanna attributes her success to her upbringing and early intellectual stimulation. “I had a wonderful upbringing. I always tell people I was raised with purpose,” she shared.
“My parents encouraged us to stretch our minds and think independently and critically. We often read newspapers and discussed them with my dad, an accomplished journalist and writer. This nurtured our curiosity and enhanced our ability to grasp complex topics,” Ikanna elaborated.
Ikanna also emphasized her knack for multitasking, which enabled her to juggle academics, extracurricular activities, and leadership roles, all while excelling in her studies. “I’m adept at multitasking, which meant I didn’t have to compromise on many fronts. I engaged in school politics and participated in various extracurriculars. The only thing I had to sacrifice sometimes was sleep,” she explained.
Her dedication to excellence has now rewarded her with a full scholarship to the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, where she is presently studying for a Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) degree as an Oxford-Hackney BCL Graduate Scholar.
The prestigious Oxford BCL is a postgraduate law degree comparable to a Master of Laws (LLM) at other institutions.
Following her master’s degree, Ikanna intends to pursue a PhD in Corporate and Commercial Law to deepen her expertise in the domain.
