NASU and SSANU will begin an indefinite nationwide strike on Monday, October 28, 2024, over the non-payment of four months’ withheld salaries, citing delays from the Finance Ministry despite partial approval from the president.

The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of non-teaching staff unions in universities, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), has directed members to launch an indefinite nationwide strike from Monday over the non-payment of four months’ withheld wages.
According to the unions’ leadership, the strike will officially commence at midnight on Sunday, October 27, 2024.
A circular, titled “Latest Development Regarding the Withheld Four (4) Months’ Salaries,” was sent to all NASU and SSANU branch chairmen across universities and inter-university centers. The strike, originally set for October 23, was postponed to accommodate a Trade Group Council meeting of NASU branches scheduled for that date.
Despite President Bola Tinubu approving a partial payment of 50% of the withheld salaries, the unions criticized the Finance Ministry for delays, casting doubt on the government’s sincerity in resolving the matter.
The circular, signed by NASU General Secretary Prince Peters Adeyemi and SSANU President Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim, emphasized that several appeals had been made to the government without success.
It also noted that the NASU Trade Group Council meeting will take place at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, on October 23-24, 2024, and the adjusted strike date was chosen to ensure proper coordination and unity between the two unions.
The leadership thanked members for their continued support, reaffirming their determination to continue the struggle until their demands are fully met.
