Nigeria has won two silver medals at the 2024 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, where students from over 20 African countries competed, showcasing exceptional talent and academic excellence.


Nigeria has earned two silver medals at this year’s Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO).
The competition, which took place in Johannesburg, South Africa, saw Elvis Chiedozie Ekwelem from Rivers State and Oghenerukevwe Patrick Esemitodje from Lagos State win silver medals, representing Nigeria in the annual continental mathematics contest.
The Olympiad attracted young mathematicians from over 20 African countries.
Prof. Zeblon Vilakazi, Vice Chancellor of the University of Witwatersrand and host of the event, praised the Nigerian students for their exceptional intellectual rigor, dedication, and talent. He highlighted that the competition’s purpose is to foster academic excellence and research among young African mathematical scholars.
Prof. Vilakazi noted that 20 countries participated in this year’s PAMO, with an additional eight joining virtually. He emphasized that the strong performance of the Nigerian students reflects their deep understanding of mathematics and their determination to excel at the continental level, positioning them as promising candidates for the future advancement of the subject.
