Nigerian Scholar Earns Master’s with Distinction, Wins Full PhD Scholarship in UK

Saheed Ibrahim, a distinguished Nigerian scholar, earned a master’s degree with distinction from the University of Ibadan and secured a fully funded PhD scholarship at Birmingham City University to research election integrity and misinformation.

A brilliant Nigerian scholar, Saheed Ibrahim, has been awarded a fully funded PhD scholarship at Birmingham City University, United Kingdom, following his outstanding academic achievements.

Saheed’s journey began at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba (AAUA), where he graduated as the Best Graduating Student in Mass Communication in 2011. His passion for communication studies led him to the University of Ibadan, where he earned a master’s degree in Communication and Language Arts with distinction in 2021.

His fully funded PhD scholarship comes through a competitive research award sponsored by Meedan, a global technology non-profit focused on strengthening journalism, digital literacy, and information accessibility. At Birmingham City University, his research will explore election integrity, analyzing the impact of misinformation and technology-facilitated gender-based violence on democratic processes.

In a LinkedIn post, Saheed shared that this opportunity aligns with his commitment to fostering a transparent information ecosystem and strengthening democracy through research on misinformation.

Reflecting on his achievement, Saheed expressed deep appreciation for the mentors, colleagues, and institutions that shaped his journey. He credited the Dubawa Fellowship by the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development for expanding his expertise in misinformation and fact-checking.

He also acknowledged the Centre for Media and Society (CEMESO) for equipping him with critical skills in verifying political messages and ensuring voter access to accurate information. Additionally, he praised Code for Africa (CfA) for its training programs on combating misinformation, emphasizing that these experiences will be instrumental in his PhD research.

As he embarks on this new academic chapter, Saheed looks forward to making meaningful contributions that will shape public discourse and safeguard the integrity of democratic systems.
