Nigerian students on government scholarships in Morocco are facing severe hardship, including homelessness and medical neglect, due to unpaid stipends, with the government attributing delays to fiscal constraints.

Nigerian students studying in Morocco under a Federal Government scholarship scheme are facing severe hardship, with reports of homelessness, medical neglect, and unpaid rents. The students, who were awarded scholarships to study various courses, including medicine and engineering, claim they have not received financial support for years, despite being beneficiaries of the Nigerian government scholarship.
According to a video shared by social media activist Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, the students are struggling to survive, with some forced to secretly seek work to make ends meet, violating the terms of their scholarship agreement. One student, a final-year medical student, expressed frustration, stating, “They gave us scholarships to become doctors and return to Nigeria to strengthen the healthcare system, but they left us here”.
The students have appealed to the Federal Government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene, warning that more lives and academic futures are at risk if the situation continues. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also called on President Bola Tinubu to address the issue, describing the situation as a “blatant betrayal of trust” by the government.
The Federal Government has denied abandoning the students, stating that all valid beneficiaries have received payments up to 2024. Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, attributed delays in payments to fiscal constraints and assured that the government remains committed to supporting students already enrolled under the previous arrangements.
The situation has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for the government to take immediate action to address the plight of the stranded students.
