Nigerian student Abdulmalik Adetola Lawal has been named the 2025 Outstanding Graduate Student Researcher at the University of Nevada, Reno, for his impactful work in health communication and media innovation aimed at improving public health in underserved communities.


Abdulmalik Adetola Lawal, a graduate student at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), has been named the Outstanding Graduate Student Researcher of the Year for 2025. The award recognizes his exceptional contributions to health communication and media innovation.
Currently pursuing a master’s degree at the Reynolds School of Journalism, Lawal’s research explores how media influences health behaviors in underserved communities. Drawing from personal experience during Nigeria’s Ebola outbreak, he focuses on designing effective, evidence-based health messages—particularly around mental health and antimicrobial resistance.
Lawal emphasizes the transformative power of communication, saying, “Media isn’t just for spreading information—it’s a tool to build a healthier, more informed society.”
Beyond academics, he has shared his work at national and international conferences and contributes actively to global public health conversations through communication campaigns aimed at improving health literacy.
