Cursory: The ASUU leadership of the university where a lecturer proposed to his fiance in class has stated their stand on the matter, following outrage of some netizens on the matter, while the university’s spokesperson declined to comment, considering it a personal matter.
Recall how a lecturer at the university surprised many students on February 14th by proposing to his fiancée in her classroom. Photographs circulating on Facebook captured Wisdom Anucha kneeling with a ring in hand as he proposed. Some Nigerians criticized the lecturer for his public proposal in the classroom.
Ada Ujaligwa, a Facebook user, deemed the action unethical and unprofessional, stating that the lecturer could have risked losing his job if it had occurred in a university outside Nigeria.

“I think it is very unethical and unprofessional for a lecturer to propose to a student publicly in a classroom surrounded by other students who were awing and videoing the show,” Ms Ujaligwa wrote.
However, when contacted the university’s spokesperson, Chijioke Nwogu, declined to comment, considering it a personal matter.
“I think this is a personal matter. I am not in a position to speak about his (the lecturer’s) relationship,” Mr Nwogu said while expressing surprise that he was contacted for such a “trivial issue”.
Similarly, the leadership of the ASUU at the institution stated that the lecturer did not violate the union’s ethics or university regulations.
ASUU’s chairperson, Chidi Mbah, explained that after discussing the matter at a union meeting, they concluded that there is no law against the lecturer’s action.
“It (the proposal to the student) is not against our principle. It is a matter of choice,” Mr Mbah stated.“On the part of the university law, to the best of my knowledge, there is no law that is against that,” he added.
Mbah further argued that it is even encouraged for lecturers to marry their students, citing examples such as the management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) giving prizes to members who marry each other. He clarified that the proposal occurred during a time when there was no ongoing academic activity in the classroom, thus not violating any known law.
