No Internet Needed: JAMB Boss Reveals How They Conduct UTME

Think JAMB’s UTME relies on the internet? Think again! Many believe poor internet causes exam glitches, but JAMB has set the record straight.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has once again clarified that its Computer-Based Test (CBT) examination is not Internet-based.

The Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, made this known on February 25, 2025, while addressing a delegation from the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) at JAMB’s headquarters in Bwari.

According to the JAMB boss, there is a common misconception that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) relies on internet connectivity and that poor internet service is responsible for occasional technical glitches during the exam.

However, he emphasized that JAMB operates on a Local Area Network (LAN), not the Internet.

How JAMB’s LAN-Based System Works

Prof. Oloyede explained that a LAN is a closed computer network that connects systems within a limited area—such as an exam center or a school—without relying on external internet services.

This network ensures data security and efficiency, as all exam materials are encrypted and securely transmitted to candidate terminals before the test begins.

NIN, Data Correction, and Fraud Prevention

The JAMB boss also addressed the issue of the National Identification Number (NIN), stating that it remains a mandatory requirement for UTME registration.

He further explained that while data correction is allowed in cases of genuine errors, any changes made must be properly documented to maintain system integrity.

Candidates and stakeholders were encouraged to use the “REQUERY” feature on the JAMB portal to address data-related concerns.

UTME Registration Is Not School-Based

Prof. Oloyede also clarified that, unlike WAEC and NECO, JAMB registration is an individual process and not a school-based exercise.

This means that students must personally ensure they meet all registration requirements rather than relying on schools to handle it for them.

With this clarification from JAMB, candidates can be assured that internet connectivity does not affect the UTME. The LAN-based system ensures a secure, efficient, and controlled examination environment.
