The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has commenced an indefinite strike in Oyo State and plans nationwide protests to demand the safe release of teachers and students abducted by gunmen in Oriire Local Government Area.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to begin an indefinite strike from June 1, 2026, following the continued captivity of teachers and students abducted in Oriire Local Government Area.
The union said the decision was taken to pressure authorities to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown weeks after the attack. According to NUT, the prolonged abduction has created fear among teachers, disrupted learning, and raised concerns among parents and communities.
Reports indicate that gunmen invaded several schools in Oriire on May 15, kidnapping dozens of pupils, students, and teachers, while two teachers were reportedly killed during the attacks.
In a statement signed by Oyo NUT leaders Hassan Fatai and Salami Olukayode, the union instructed all affected teachers to withdraw their services indefinitely and remain at home until the abductees regain their freedom.
The national leadership of the union also announced plans for solidarity rallies across state capitals to draw attention to the insecurity facing schools and to demand urgent government intervention.
NUT reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and welfare of teachers and learners, stressing that it would continue lawful actions until the kidnapped teachers and students are rescued and reunited with their families.
