Nyasia Jordan, an 18-year-old from Springfield, overcame poverty, loss, and bullying to become the first Black valedictorian in her high school’s 32-year history, earning a $288,000 scholarship to Harvard where she plans to study Chemistry and Neurobiology and inspire others through her resilience and academic excellence.

Massachusetts, USA — Nyasia Jordan, an 18-year-old student from Springfield, has made history as the first Black valedictorian in the 32-year history of Springfield Central High School, earning over $288,000 in scholarships and securing admission to Harvard University.
Despite growing up in poverty—living in multiple homes including a shelter, and attending several different schools—Jordan achieved academic excellence with a 1,310 SAT score and a 4.47 GPA. Her hard work earned her a $72,000 annual scholarship from Harvard, where she plans to study Chemistry, Neurobiology, or both.
Jordan faced numerous hardships, including the loss of her father, whose work as a landscaper barely sustained the family. She took on leadership roles in school as a member of the National Honor Society, National Math Society, and president of the Gender Equality Club, while also managing varsity sports teams.
Throughout her journey, Jordan remained resilient, often staying at school late to participate in activities, and pushing through bullying and stereotypes. She was labeled as a “nerd” and even described as a “white girl trapped in a Black girl’s body”—comments she later recognized as backhanded compliments stemming from societal bias.
Now preparing to begin her studies at Harvard, Jordan hopes to pursue a career in research and medicine, becoming a role model she once wished she had. Her story is a powerful testament to perseverance, self-belief, and breaking barriers in the face of adversity.
