NYSC Sanctions 131 Corps Members in 7 States over misconduct

The National Youth Service Corps has sanctioned 131 corps members of the 2021 Batch B in seven states over misconduct.

While some of the corps members will repeat their mandatory one year service, others got an extension of service year as punishment.

The states include Ekiti, Gombe, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Anambra and Bauchi.

In Ekiti State, the NYSC asked 11 corps members posted to repeat their mandatory service year for absconding from their places of primary assignment.

NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Mary Chikezie, said that seven other corps members in the state were punished with extension of service year.

Chikezie, who spoke in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, during the Passing-Out Parade of the 2021 Batch B corps members, said six of the 1,416 corps members for the batch, were rewarded for their outstanding performances in touching positively the lives of their host communities.

“Seven corps members have been found wanting and have been sanctioned with extension of service year. Eleven corps members will be remobilised for absconding,” she said.

She listed those honoured as Anuoluwa Balogun, Tom Udoudo, Dr Racheal Bob-Yellowe, Joachim Kolawole, David Onaolapo and Goodness Stephen.

Gombe State

In Gombe State, four corps members got extension; eight absconded while 775 completed their service.

Speaking at Pantami Township Stadium during the passing-out, the state Coordinator, Ada Imoni, said appropriate punishments have been meted to the erring corps members.

Imoni revealed that the disciplinary committee did not only punish the 12 corps members based on established bye-laws, but also appraised the Community Development Service performance of 13 others for their delivery.

Bayelsa State

Seven corps members got their service extended in Bayelsa State.

The state Coordinator, Adamu Jiya, disclosed this during the passing out parade held at the Peace Park in Yenagoa.

He also said that eight other corps members would start their service year afresh for absconding from the mandatory one-year national assignment.

Jiya, who disclosed that 1,831 corps members passed out successfully, advised them to be responsible and patriotic citizens of the country.

Nine corps members posted to Akwa Ibom State will repeat their service year for absconding during the compulsory one-year service in the state.

The State Coordinator, Mr Chinyere Ekwe, handed down the order during the passing-out ceremony on Thursday.

Ekwe said that eight corps members who indulged in several forms of misconduct will also undergo various forms of extension between two weeks and four months.

Edo State

The Edo State Coordinator, Mrs Abiodun Olubukola, said 18 corps members who absconded will repeat their service year.

“A total of 1,503 corps members are passing-out; 18 others who absconded have to repeat the entire service year in another location, while four others will have their service year extended,” she said.

Anambra State

About 42 corps members that served in Anambra State were sanctioned for defaulting in the four cardinal programmes of the scheme.

It was also gathered that one corps member died as a result of natural illness.

The state NYSC Coordinator, Mrs. Blessing Iruma, said some of the affected persons would have their service year extended, while others would repeat the service.
