Ogun Teacher Trainee Arrested After Pupil Loses Eye in Classroom Accident

A teacher trainee in Ogun State, Adéọlá Adeyemo, was arrested after an accidental classroom incident resulted in an 11-year-old pupil losing her right eye, sparking police investigations and raising concerns about safety in schools.

A 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, identified as Adéọlá Adeyemo, has been arrested for allegedly causing the loss of an 11-year-old pupil’s right eye in a classroom incident at Owiwi Nursery and Primary School, Obada Oko, Ogun State.

According to the Ogun State Police Command, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. when Adeyemo, who was undergoing her teaching practice at the school, was holding a cane in preparation for an end-of-year party. The pupil, identified as Alao Idera, reportedly rushed toward the teacher, causing the cane to accidentally pierce her eye.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola disclosed on Tuesday that the injured pupil was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, where doctors surgically removed her damaged eye.

Odutola clarified, “The teacher did not flog the student, nor was there any wrongdoing on the part of the pupil. It was an unfortunate accident during which the cane the teacher was holding caused the injury. The suspect has been arrested and is currently under investigation.”

The spokesperson also revealed that Adeyemo, upon learning that the pupil’s eye had been removed, allegedly attempted to ingest harmful substances in a suicide attempt. However, the police intervened and rushed her to the hospital, where she received treatment and is now stable.

This incident follows another tragic event in Ogun State involving a teacher and student. A teacher at Obada Grammar School, Azamdjo Elijah, was recently arrested for allegedly causing the death of a Senior Secondary School 2 student, Monday Arijo, after instructing him to perform 162 frog jumps and administering 24 strokes of the cane.

The police have urged teachers and schools to prioritize safety and discipline measures to avoid further tragic incidents.
