UNIJOS Orders Emergency Hostel Evacuation Amid Rising Insecurity in Jos

The University of Jos ordered an urgent hostel evacuation as renewed violence and insecurity in Jos intensified fears for student safety.

The University of Jos has directed all students to immediately vacate their hostels due to escalating security concerns in Jos, Plateau State.

In an official statement released by the institution’s Deputy Registrar for Information and Public Relations, Emmanuel Madugu, the decision followed tense and near-chaotic incidents that occurred on Wednesday around areas close to the university, raising serious safety concerns for students. Acting on this, the Vice Chancellor, Tanko Ishaya, approved the immediate evacuation of students from campus hostels.

To support the process, the state governor, Caleb Mutfwang, provided transportation to safely move students, even during restricted curfew hours. Students living within Jos were instructed to leave by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, while those whose families reside outside the state are scheduled for evacuation starting 8 a.m. Thursday.

University authorities reassured the public that adequate security measures have been put in place to protect both the hostels and the wider campus. Students and staff were also advised to remain calm while awaiting further updates.

The situation follows a recent deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba area, which resulted in multiple casualties and heightened tension across Jos. In response, the state government imposed a 48-hour curfew in Jos North Local Government Area, later relaxed to allow limited movement between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Despite the relaxation, fresh unrest reportedly broke out on Wednesday morning, with suspected hoodlums attacking residents and motorists, further worsening the already fragile security situation.
