African Scholar Earns Two PhDs Across Two Continents in Just Five Years

Mamosa Ngcala, a determined African scholar, earned two PhDs across South Africa and Germany within five years, overcoming immense personal and academic challenges to achieve her extraordinary success.

Mamosa Ngcala, a brilliant African scholar, has achieved an extraordinary academic feat, earning two doctoral degrees within five and a half years—one from South Africa and the other from Germany.

Mamosa’s academic path began at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Chemistry in 2015. She went on to complete her Master’s degree in Plant Biotechnology at the University of the Free State in 2018.

In 2019, she embarked on her first PhD journey in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Cape Town, focusing on specialized research in biochemistry and microbiology. Two years into her program, she seized an opportunity to participate in an academic exchange, enrolling at the University of Potsdam in Germany for a second doctoral program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Despite the immense challenges, including pandemic disruptions and intense self-doubt, Mamosa persevered. By 2025, she had successfully completed both PhDs—a rare and remarkable accomplishment.

Reflecting on her journey on LinkedIn, Mamosa shared the deep emotional struggles she faced: feelings of failure, depression during the COVID-19 lockdowns, and overwhelming frustration. She credited her breakthrough to faith, inner resilience, and support from her community.

“This doctorate is not mine alone. It belongs to everyone who walked this road with me,” she wrote, giving thanks to her supervisors, family, friends, colleagues, and her partner, and ultimately honoring God for carrying her through.

From presenting her research on international platforms to winning scientific competitions, Mamosa’s journey wasn’t just academic—it was a powerful story of growth, courage, and unwavering belief in a dream.
