“Shocking and Inhumane”: Teacher Locks 4-Year-Old Boy in Office Overnight in Enugu

A teacher at Central School Enugwu Akwu Achi, Enugu State, allegedly locked a 4-year-old boy in her office as punishment, leaving him trapped for hours until he was discovered terrified and exhausted, sparking community outrage and an ongoing investigation into child endangerment and teacher misconduct.

A disturbing incident occurred at Central School Enugwu Akwu Achi in Oji River Local Government Area, Enugu State, where a teacher allegedly locked a 4-year-old boy inside her office as a form of punishment.

Teacher’s Cruel Punishment

The teacher reportedly instructed the Primary One student to kneel in her office after school hours. She then locked the door and took the keys with her, leaving the young child trapped from around 2 p.m. The boy was only discovered later in the evening, around 10 p.m., after his parents and local residents raised the alarm about his disappearance.

Community Responds with Outrage

After several hours of searching, the boy’s parents, joined by neighbors and school staff, broke into the teacher’s office. When they found the child, he was reportedly terrified and exhausted, prompting widespread outrage within the community. Many residents condemned the teacher’s actions as “wicked and inhumane” and called for her immediate arrest and dismissal.

Investigation and Authorities’ Action

The Chief Security Officer of Oji River LGA, Nnaemeka Anyalebechi Radica, has confirmed that an investigation is underway. He assured the public that justice would be served, emphasizing that preliminary findings suggest gross negligence and child endangerment. Authorities have stated that disciplinary measures are being considered for the teacher involved.

The case has sparked widespread discussions and demands for accountability, with many demanding stronger safeguards to protect children in schools across the region.
