Olympic Athlete Gabby Thomas Earns Two University Degrees While Competing Professionally

Olympic athlete Gabby Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard and a master’s from the University of Texas while training for the 2024 Olympics, volunteering at a clinic, and drawing inspiration from her single mother’s academic journey.

Gabby Thomas, a 27-year-old American Olympic track and field athlete, has successfully earned two academic degrees while maintaining an elite athletic career. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology and Global Health at Harvard University, and went on to earn a Master’s in Public Health at the University of Texas.

Reflecting on her time at Harvard, Gabby admitted she initially had doubts but is grateful for the experience. “I will always have so much love for this place and an eternal gratitude for the people who made it home. I’ll miss it so much, but I am extremely excited to see what’s next for me on my journey,” she shared.

While pursuing her Master’s degree, Gabby trained rigorously for the 2024 Paris Olympics and also volunteered at a medical clinic. She described her routine as a balancing act: “I like coming home from track and having something completely different to focus on. And when I’m doing my clinic work, I can’t wait to get back to the track.”

Her mother’s perseverance—earning a Ph.D. as a single parent—inspired her journey. “Watching her work her way up with so little to becoming a successful professor and launching a nonprofit for education really pushed me,” Gabby said.

Though encouraged by her mother to pursue a Ph.D. next, Gabby plans to focus entirely on her Olympic goals. “When I’m tired and wheezing from practice, I remind myself how grateful I am to be doing what I love—and doing it for a living.”
