A teacher at Soun High School in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, was beaten to death by students after confronting them for gambling during class, sparking outrage and calls for justice and stronger protection for educators.

A tragic incident has occurred at Soun High School in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, where a teacher, Mr. Fatai Adegoke, was reportedly beaten to death by some of his students after he attempted to stop them from gambling during school hours.
According to reports, the teacher caught a group of students gambling inside a classroom and tried to discipline them. The situation quickly turned violent when the students allegedly attacked him, breaking his limbs and causing fatal injuries. Mr. Adegoke was rushed to the hospital but later died from the wounds he sustained.
In a statement issued by a group of concerned educators, the incident was condemned as “a cruel assault on the teaching profession.” The group described the late teacher as a dedicated and principled educator who lost his life while trying to uphold discipline and moral values within the school environment.
Teachers’ associations have called on the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM), and the police to ensure the attackers are arrested and brought to justice. They also urged parents to take responsibility for instilling proper discipline and respect in their children.
The killing has sparked outrage across the community and renewed calls for urgent reforms to protect teachers and restore safety in Nigerian schools. Efforts to reach the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
Reports indicate that the students involved in the assault have fled, leaving the school and local community in shock and mourning.
