Authorities have debunked a viral claim that NYSC members died in a road crash in Gombe, confirming through the FRSC, police, and NYSC officials that no such incident occurred and urging the public to ignore the false report.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has dismissed a report alleging that prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members travelling to Gombe State were involved in a fatal road accident.
A viral post on social media had claimed that 16 people died in the crash and two were critically injured and rushed to an undisclosed hospital. However, checks by Legit.ng, including direct inquiries to security agencies and the NYSC, revealed that the report was false.

FRSC Says No Crash Occurred
FRSC Public Relations Officer, Janet Kassa, confirmed that there was no evidence whatsoever of such an incident anywhere in Gombe State.
“I have checked with my colleagues; there is no indication this happened in Gombe — not even a trace. I have made several calls across units and commands, but nothing suggests the report is real. It may just be one of those posts created to attract attention,” she said.
Kassa added that the corps would provide updates only if credible information emerged, stressing that the viral post should be ignored.
Police Also Deny Any Crash in the State
The Gombe State Police Command echoed the FRSC’s position.
Police spokesperson DSP Buhari Abdullahi said no hospital, community, or agency had reported such an incident.
“We are still verifying the claims, but as of this evening, we have found nothing. The reports did not even specify where the victims were taken or provide any identifiable details,” he noted.
NYSC Confirms Camp Activities Are Ongoing
Despite the online panic, the NYSC orientation camp in Gombe opened as scheduled, with prospective corps members expected to be sworn in on Friday.
The NYSC Public Relations Officer in Gombe, Jennifer Laha, also questioned the authenticity of the images circulating online.
“From the photos I saw, the spellings and details looked suspicious — almost like AI-generated images. Besides, NYSC does not provide buses to transport prospective corps members to camp,” she explained.
Context: Recent Crashes Involving Corps Members
Earlier in January 2025, at least one prospective corps member died in a road accident in Ebonyi State, where a 14-seater bus carrying 12 prospective corps members was involved in a crash.
Just this week, Legit.ng also reported another fatal incident involving a different prospective corps member travelling to the NYSC camp in Ebonyi, bringing recent total deaths to four.
Authorities Urge Public to Ignore Fake Reports
Officials have warned Nigerians to disregard the viral Gombe crash message, describing it as a panic-inducing rumour with no supporting evidence.
