Panic as Lagos Public School Building Collapses in Ikorodu

A public school building partially collapsed in Ikorodu, Lagos, after school hours on January 15, 2026, prompting emergency response, safety investigations, and government orders to relocate pupils and rebuild the facility.

A public school building in Ikorodu, Lagos State, partially collapsed on Thursday evening, January 15, 2026, sending shockwaves through the Odo-Kekere Community. The incident occurred after school hours, and authorities believe it was a divine intervention that prevented a major disaster.

Residents reported hearing a loud crack and seeing dust everywhere, prompting them to rush to the scene. First responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) quickly arrived and cordoned off the area for safety purposes.

Preliminary reports indicate that no students were in the classrooms at the time of the collapse, but emergency teams are conducting search and rescue operations to ensure no security guards or staff members were trapped in the rubble.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of public school buildings in Lagos, with calls for immediate renovation and overhaul of aging educational infrastructure. Mrs Boluwaji Aderinto, a resident, expressed her concerns, saying, “We thank God it didn’t happen in the morning when the children were in their desks. This is a wake-up call for the government”.

A high delegation from the State Ministry of Education has visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, and officials are conducting structural integrity tests on the remaining buildings to determine their safety.

The Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has ordered an immediate relocation of pupils to nearby schools and promised to construct a new classroom block.
