Police Investigate Killing of 300-Level University Student in Rivers State

The Rivers State Police have launched a full investigation into the fatal shooting of Julius Okpor, a 300-level student of Ignatius Ajuru University, who was killed in a suspected cult-related attack in Port Harcourt.

The Rivers State Police Command has begun a comprehensive investigation into the tragic death of Julius Okpor, a 300-level student at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, who was shot and killed in what authorities believe was a cult-related attack.

Okpor, who hailed from Okposi in the Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, was reportedly ambushed and fatally shot on Saturday, July 20, 2025, in the Rumuolumeni axis of Port Harcourt, a part of the state known for frequent clashes among rival youth gangs and cult groups.

According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Grace Iringe-Koko, the incident occurred near Cecilia Road, a residential and commercial neighborhood that has recently witnessed rising insecurity. Upon receiving a distress call, police patrol teams arrived at the scene and immediately evacuated the victim to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). Sadly, Okpor was declared dead upon arrival by medical personnel.

“Preliminary intelligence gathered by investigators suggests that the killing may be connected to an ongoing feud between rival cult factions operating in the area,” said Iringe-Koko. “The Rivers State Police Command is treating this case with utmost seriousness. A full-scale investigation has been launched to track down the suspects, unravel the motive behind the killing, and ensure that justice is served.”

Sources close to the investigation revealed that Okpor had no known criminal record and was reportedly well-regarded among his peers. However, detectives are exploring multiple angles, including whether he may have been mistakenly targeted or involved by association.

This incident has sparked renewed concern among residents and student communities, who are calling on the government and security agencies to strengthen measures to combat cultism and protect young people in the state.

As of the time of reporting, no arrests have been made. The police are urging members of the public with useful information to come forward.
