President Bola Tinubu has officially approved the long-awaited transformation of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) into a university, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s education sector.
The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced the approval during a visit to the institution, highlighting YABATECH’s strong academic foundation, with over 200 PhD-holding staff members, as a key factor in the decision. He emphasized the government’s commitment to innovation, technology, and skills development, urging the institution to integrate emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Coding into its curriculum.
Dr. Alausa also encouraged YABATECH to strengthen industry partnerships, commercialize research, and leverage alumni endowments to enhance its growth. The Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, and the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Funso Afolabi, welcomed the development, pledging to uphold excellence and seek necessary government support. A legislative bill to formalize YABATECH’s new status is expected to be presented to the National Assembly soon.
