Prof. Ademola Tayo Ends Tenure at Babcock University, Records Historic Academic Milestones

Babcock University’s 23rd convocation celebrated the graduation of 3,229 students—including a record-breaking 217 PhDs and 241 First Class honours—while also marking the end of Prof. Ademola Tayo’s impactful 10-year tenure as Vice-Chancellor.

Babcock University, located in Ilishan-Remo, Ogun State, marked a momentous occasion at its 23rd convocation ceremony, celebrating the graduation of 3,229 students, including a record 217 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) holders and 241 First Class graduates.

The convocation also symbolized the end of an era as Professor Ademola Tayo, the university’s President and Vice-Chancellor, prepares to step down on December 1, 2025, after a decade of service marked by academic and infrastructural growth.

In his emotional farewell speech, Prof. Tayo reflected on his tenure with gratitude, highlighting achievements such as increased research output, grant wins by faculty members, and notable graduate success across various sectors.

“Today we unleash not just graduates, but ambassadors of faith, excellence, and moral leadership,” he said.

This year’s convocation also marked the first graduation of 55 students from the university’s Centre for Open and Distance e-Learning (BUCODeL), signaling a new chapter in the institution’s academic evolution.

Chancellor Prof. Bassey Idoh commended the university’s leadership and staff for their dedication to excellence and their role in shaping future leaders.

Among the top achievers:

  • Fatimah Lawal (Department of Economics) emerged as the overall best undergraduate with a 4.97 CGPA out of 5.0.
  • Oladele Alabi and Emmanuel Okpechi were the best PhD graduates, each with a CGPA of 4.91.
  • Oluwabamise Adeniyi was recognized as the best Master’s degree graduate with a 4.89 CGPA.
  • Dr. Bolaji Frederick Olusegun, aged 71, earned a PhD in Law, becoming the oldest graduate of the year.

The ceremony celebrated not only academic excellence but also the transformative leadership of Prof. Tayo, whose legacy continues to shape the university’s future.
