Professor Jimoh Olanipekun of Obafemi Awolowo University tragically passed away after collapsing during a departmental meeting, leaving the university community in mourning over the loss of a respected scholar and mentor.


The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community in Ile-Ife, Osun State, is mourning the sudden death of Professor Jimoh Olanipekun, a highly respected scholar, who collapsed during a departmental meeting and was later confirmed dead at the hospital. The unexpected loss has left staff, students, and colleagues in shock, as the late professor was celebrated for his dedication to academics and his remarkable contributions to the university.
According to a statement from the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, Professor Olanipekun began experiencing severe breathing difficulties during the meeting. Recognizing the urgency, his colleagues quickly rushed him to the university’s Health and Medical Centre. After an initial examination, doctors referred him to the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC) for further treatment, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Following the news of his passing, OAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, led a delegation of the university’s management to visit the bereaved family. He expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of such an esteemed academic figure and described the incident as both shocking and painful. Professor Bamire encouraged the family to find comfort in the meaningful life Olanipekun lived, acknowledging his lasting legacy in the field of philosophy and his positive impact on the institution.
“We are still in disbelief that such a brilliant mind could leave us so suddenly while carrying out his duties,” Bamire stated during the condolence visit. He also reminded the family to draw strength from their faith, adding, “The Lord gives and the Lord takes away according to His will.”
Professor Jimoh Olanipekun was widely admired for his intellectual achievements, mentorship, and dedication to education. His passing has cast a dark cloud over the university, as tributes continue to pour in from students, colleagues, and academic associates who are grieving the loss of a true scholar and leader.
