Professor Victor Anosa, at the launch of his autobiography “Destined for the Ivory Tower”, revealed that many retired Nigerian professors live in poverty and depend on their children due to meagre pensions, urging early financial planning and criticizing the nation’s neglect of intellectuals.

Renowned veterinary professor, Victor Anosa, has revealed the financial struggles many retired Nigerian academics face, stating that numerous professors now depend on their children for survival due to poor and irregular pensions.
Speaking at the launch of his autobiography, “Destined for the Ivory Tower”, in Lagos, Anosa described how pensions between ₦200,000 and ₦300,000 are inadequate for retirees, particularly professors who served the nation for decades. He emphasized the nation’s neglect of intellectuals, saying, “After 35 to 40 years of service, our professors are left to survive in poverty, while the country rewards mediocrity.”
Anosa sharply criticized the disparity between academic salaries and political allowances, noting, “A professor earns less than a legislator’s wardrobe allowance.” He added that poor pay has driven a brain drain from universities, with top graduates seeking better opportunities outside academia, leaving less qualified individuals to teach.
He urged young professionals to begin financial planning early, sharing his personal strategy of mid-career investments in shares and real estate. His book not only recounts his academic journey and early life but also offers lessons on financial literacy and resilience.
Reviewer Dr. Marcel Mbamalu praised the book as an inspiring blend of personal memoir, cultural history, and practical guidance. Renowned virologist Prof. Oyewale Tomori, who chaired the event, commended Anosa’s lifelong excellence and influence.
Guests included traditional ruler Igwe Gerald Mbamalu, Prof. S.I.B. Cadmus, and real estate entrepreneur Chief Kennedy Okonkwo.
