Sanusi Earns PhD in Islamic Law in London University

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has completed a PhD in Islamic Law at the University of London, UK, following his 2020 dethronement and subsequent relocation to the UK.

Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, has successfully completed his PhD in Islamic Law at the University of London, UK.

In a touching video, Sanusi is seen becoming emotional after learning that his thesis was approved without any revisions.

The video also captures the former Emir receiving congratulations during a virtual meeting.

His thesis, titled “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco,” explores the role of Islamic law in social reform.

Sanusi began the PhD program after being deposed by then-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano in 2020. He subsequently relocated to the UK to focus on his studies.

About five months after his dethronement, Sanusi was appointed as a visiting fellow at the African Studies Centre of the University of Oxford.

In 2019, he received an honorary doctorate in finance from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London.

Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), earned a second bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies and Fiqh from Africa International University in Khartoum, Sudan, in 1997. He is widely regarded as one of the most educated Nigerians to have held a traditional leadership position.
