Six Nigerian Students Earn Top Honors in Cambridge Awards

Six students from three Nigerian secondary schools have been awarded the prestigious Top in the World Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards for their performance in the June and November 2023 Cambridge examination series.

Six students from three Nigerian secondary schools have been awarded the prestigious Top in the World Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards for their performance in the June and November 2023 Cambridge examination series.

Mrs. Lucy Pearson, the Country Director of the Nigeria British Council, announced the achievements at the British Council Recognition and Outstanding Cambridge Learners Awards event held in Lagos on Thursday night.

The British Council, in partnership with Cambridge International Examinations, honors exceptional students from various partner schools across Nigeria.

Pearson noted that these awards were given to students who achieved the highest global marks in English as a second language (speaking endorsement).

The six awardees include two students from the June 2023 series and four from the November 2023 series.

They hail from Brookstone School, James Hope College, Lagos, and The Ambassadors Group of Schools. Specifically, Oluwademilade David and Omaghomi Sharon from Brookstone School were recognized for their June 2023 accomplishments.

Obodoechi Chiedozie, Favour Chinecherem, and Fehintoluwa Erinayo from James Hope College, and Bamidele Sharon from The Ambassadors Group of Schools were the November 2023 honorees.

Pearson highlighted that 95 students from 37 British Council partner schools achieved the highest marks in subjects such as Sociology, ICT, and Business Studies. “This award is granted to students who have obtained the highest marks in the world in a single subject,” she said.

In addition, 71 students received the Top in Nigeria awards for achieving the highest marks in individual subjects within the country. Further recognitions included 48 High Achievement Awards and eight Best Across Awards, which acknowledge students with the highest cumulative marks across multiple subjects.

Pearson emphasized that the awards are determined using stringent criteria to ensure consistency in recognizing achievements globally across all subjects and qualification levels. She noted that these internationally recognized qualifications pave the way for students to attend top universities, secure outstanding career opportunities, and build more rewarding lives.

The council is honored to collaborate with partner schools in delivering UK assessments and qualifications in Nigeria, Pearson added.

Mr. Juan Visser, the Regional Director of Sub-Sahara Africa International Education at Cambridge University, congratulated the Nigerian students on their achievements. He highlighted that every aspect of Cambridge education—from curriculum and teaching to resources and assessment—is designed to help learners reach their full potential.

“The Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards recognize exceptional performance worldwide in Cambridge examinations,” Visser said. “These awards reflect the talent and hard work of learners and acknowledge the dedication and commitment of their teachers and parents. With the qualifications they have earned, Cambridge learners are well-prepared to pursue exciting opportunities and achieve their dreams.”

Speaking on behalf of the awardees, Oluwademilade David expressed their excitement and acknowledged the hard work required to earn the recognition. David encouraged Nigerian students to strive for excellence in their studies.
