Mercy Fakude, a South African scholar, earned a PhD in Plant Breeding from Iowa State University through the Fulbright Scholarship, making significant contributions to maize breeding and inspiring young Africans with her dedication to education and innovation.

Mercy Fakude, a talented scholar from South Africa, has achieved an extraordinary milestone by earning a PhD in Plant Breeding from Iowa State University, fully funded by the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship Program.

The Fulbright Scholarship covered her tuition, accommodation, living expenses, visa, and travel costs, enabling her to complete her doctoral research on developing a colchicine-free doubled haploid breeding protocol called Spontaneous Haploid Genome Doubling (SHGD) in maize. This groundbreaking innovation aims to improve the efficiency and sustainability of maize breeding, marking a significant contribution to agricultural science.

Celebrating her achievement on LinkedIn, Mercy described the journey as life-changing and expressed deep gratitude to her advisor, committee members, family, and friends for their unwavering support.

Her academic journey includes a Master of Science in Agronomy and Crop Science from North-West University, South Africa, and a specialization in Climate Change, Agriculture, and Food Security from the University of Galway, Ireland. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Agronomy and Crop Science from North-West University.
