Eighteen female UNILAG graduates who achieved first-class honors attribute their success to determination, discipline, faith, effective time management, and balancing personal challenges with academic and spiritual growth.


Eighteen female graduates from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) have shared insights into their journeys toward achieving first-class honors. Their experiences highlight the significance of determination, discipline, faith, and effective time management.
Oyindamola Arikawe attributes her success to her parents’ influence, noting that her mother’s role as a school owner and her father’s emphasis on excellence instilled in her a drive to excel. She emphasized the importance of prioritizing tasks and maintaining a strong relationship with God.
Temiloluwa Igbinlade set her sights on a first-class degree from the onset, fueled by an initial perfect GPA of 5.0 in her first semester. She advises students to set clear targets and trust in God, emphasizing that He can never mismanage one’s life.
Ifedayo Ayilaran combined hard work with consistent prayers, viewing her first-class achievement as a clear goal from the start. She believes that while hard work is essential, divine blessing plays a greater role in success.
Ifeoma Iwelunmor transformed from a student who once struggled academically to one who consistently aimed for excellence. Overcoming challenges like anxiety and insomnia, she underscores the importance of balancing study, prayer, and relaxation.
Chelsea Jegede was motivated by a desire to make her parents proud and to defy those who doubted her capabilities. Her ambition and discipline, combined with her faith in Jesus Christ, were pivotal in her academic journey.
Opeyemi Kareem maintained a rigorous study routine, especially during exam periods, and was driven by her previous achievements as a valedictorian. She plans to pursue further degrees, including a PhD, to solidify her career in communication.
Feranmi Abiola balanced her studies with a burgeoning career in cinematography and editing. Despite contemplating dropping out due to the challenges of juggling multiple responsibilities, her determination and support system helped her persevere.
Ahuruele Akani faced systemic challenges but remained adaptable, switching her academic focus from Economics to Mass Communication. She believes in the mantra of “consistency over intensity” and emphasizes the importance of balancing academic and social life.
These narratives collectively demonstrate that achieving academic excellence is a multifaceted endeavor, requiring a blend of personal determination, effective time management, supportive relationships, and, for many, a strong spiritual foundation.
