Student Involved in Bullying Incident Files ₦500 Million Lawsuit Against School

Lead British International School student, Namtira Bwala has initiated a legal proceedings against the school following a bullying incident.

Namtira Bwala, a student at Lead British International School in Abuja, has initiated legal proceedings against the school following an incident of bullying by her peers.

Bwala alleges that the school failed in its duty to provide a safe and supportive learning environment, leading to her victimization by fellow students.

Represented by her lawyer, Marvin Omorogbe of Deji Adeyanju and Partners, Bwala has filed a civil suit at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Abuja.

Her demands include a public apology published in two national newspapers and compensation totaling ₦500 million for general damages.

The legal action comes after a previous warning from the Adeyanju chamber, threatening court action if the school did not take appropriate measures against the student responsible for bullying Namitira.

In the recent statement provided to Pulse, Bwala seeks recognition of the school’s duty of care towards its students and holds them accountable for negligence in preventing her assault and emotional distress.

She demands restitution for the trauma and breach of privacy suffered while under the school’s supervision.

As contained in the recent statement she stated, “A declaration that by the claimant’s studentship in the defendant’s school, Lead British International School, Gwarimpa, Abuja, the defendant owes the claimant a duty of care to protect her from any physical or emotional harm as well as any breach of her privacy while under the defendant’s custody and supervision.

“A declaration that the defendant’s failure to prevent the assault, torment, emotional distress, pain, and trauma suffered by the claimant while under the custody and supervision of the defendant amounts to negligent conduct on the part of the defendant.

“An order directing the defendant to pay the claimant the sum of N500,000,000.00 (five hundred million naira) as general damages for the defendant’s breach of the duty of care it owes to the claimant, and its negligent conduct in failing to prevent the assault, torment, emotional distress, pain, trauma, and breach of privacy suffered by the claimant while under the defendant’s custody and supervision.”

The lawsuit follows the circulation of a viral video depicting Bwala being physically harassed by her classmate, Maryam Hassan, who is seen slapping and tormenting her while interrogating her about emotional distress.
