Student Nurse Suspended After Exposing Poor Conditions at Enugu Hospital

A student nurse was suspended after exposing severe lack of basic facilities at Uwani General Hospital, sparking public outrage and criticism of Peter Mbah’s administration for punishing a whistle-blower instead of addressing systemic failures.

The administration of Peter Mbah is facing public criticism after a student nurse was indefinitely suspended for revealing the poor state of Uwani General Hospital in a viral video.

The nurse, who shared her experience on social media, later confirmed in an emotional follow-up video that she had been removed from her clinical duties for speaking out. She questioned why she was being punished for drawing attention to serious issues in the hospital.

The controversy began in late March 2026 when the nurse posted footage showing alarming conditions at the government-owned facility. According to the video, staff were forced to work in darkness due to lack of electricity, with no running water and no access to essential medical supplies like oxygen—even while attending to a woman in labour.

Following the public outcry, the state government reportedly took steps to address some of the problems raised. However, attention has now shifted to the treatment of the nurse, as she has not been reinstated despite claims that improvements have been made.

Many Nigerians, including activists and social media users, have condemned the suspension, describing it as an example of punishing whistle-blowers instead of addressing systemic failures. Some commenters also criticised labour unions for not defending the nurse, while others highlighted that similar poor conditions exist in other hospitals across the state.

An anonymous official from the health ministry stated that the nurse violated civil service rules, insisting that there are proper internal channels for reporting such issues—even if her claims were true.

As public pressure grows, many are calling on the state government to reverse the suspension and protect healthcare workers who expose problems in the system.
