A Nigerian lady revealed how she dropped out of university at 17 to live with a man 18 years older than her who later became abusive, saying a slap he gave her eventually made her realise she needed to leave the relationship.
A Nigerian woman has narrated a heartbreaking experience about how her relationship with a man far older than her caused her to abandon her education.
In a video that circulated widely on TikTok, the woman identified as @ayam_smellluxury explained that the man had started showing interest in her when she was only 15 years old. At the time, she repeatedly turned him down whenever they crossed paths during her travels between Abuja and Owerri.
However, things changed after she gained admission into a university in Owerri. They met again and eventually began a relationship. During her first year in school, she moved into the man’s house and started living with him.
According to her, the man owned a small business selling ice cream and popcorn. Instead of concentrating on her studies, she gradually became involved in helping him run the business. This distraction eventually led to her dropping out of school.
She explained that they usually travelled together in his bus along with a sales assistant while distributing their products. Strangely, whenever people referred to her as his girlfriend or partner, he would deny it and introduce her as his sister.
At that time, she was 17 years old while the man was about 35.
The relationship later became toxic and controlling. She said he often criticised her over small issues and eventually began to physically abuse her. Despite trying to leave several times, she said he would insult her and warn that she would become immoral if she left him. Fear and emotional attachment made her return repeatedly.
When she once expressed interest in going back to school, he discouraged her, claiming that education had not benefited him in any way.
Before her birthday, the man complained that the gearbox of his bus had developed a fault. Her parents, who believed she was still attending school, sent money for her school fees. Instead of paying the fees, she gave the money to him so he could repair the bus.
On her birthday, she said the only gift he bought for her was a bottle of malt. Later that same day, he accused her of admiring another man’s car and slapped her.
According to her, that moment completely changed her perspective.
She said the slap made her realise the reality of the situation and pushed her to finally leave the relationship and take back control of her life.
