UI DVC Explains Why Students Were Ordered to Vacate Their Hostels

The University of Ibadan gives reason why students were ordered to vacate their hostels and granted a three-week break to allow them time to complete their registration following protests over increased school fees for the 2023/2024 academic session.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) of the University of Ibadan, Prof. Peter Olapegba, has explained the decision to order students to leave their hostels.

On Saturday, the university management issued a memo instructing students to vacate the halls of residence by 2 pm, following ongoing protests that began on Thursday in response to the governing council’s approval of increased school fees for the 2023/2024 academic session.

Prof. Olapegba stated that the fee hike led the management to grant a three-week break to allow students time to complete their registration.

“There is an increase in school fees. The management met with the leadership of the students’ union and they pleaded for time to be able to pay their school fees. So, it was mutually agreed that the school must proceed on break for three weeks for the students to be able to complete their registration,” Olapegba told TRIBUNE ONLINE.
