UNICAL’s first female SUG president, Alims Blessing Iripia, sparked online debate by appointing 50 aides to support her administration, citing their conduct and potential contributions as reasons for the decision.

The newly elected President of the Student Union Government (SUG) at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), Alims Blessing Iripia, has sparked significant discussion online by announcing the appointment of 50 aides to support her administration.
The announcement, made via a Facebook post on Sunday, August 4, 2024, has generated considerable debate on social media platforms. Blessing Iripia explained that the decision to appoint such a large number of aides was based on a thorough evaluation of their conduct and potential contributions.

“After carefully examining and assessing the following individuals based on their conduct, credibility, enthusiasm, transparency, and commitment to the Students’ Union Government’s progress and advancement, I am pleased to announce the following appointments for the efficient operation of Blessing_Alims_Led_Administration,” she stated.
The official letter confirming the appointments, dated August 1, indicates that these roles will become effective immediately, following screening and confirmation by the Senate.
Alims Blessing Iripia, a student of Peace Studies and Conflict Resolutions in the Department of Political Science, was elected as the first female SUG president on June 14, 2024.

Netizens’ Reactions:
Karen Bush questioned the necessity of the appointments, asking, “So what will be her own job after appointing half of the whole school as aides??”
An anonymous commenter criticized the decision, suggesting it was influenced by poor political practices at the state and national levels, adding, “Nigeria is officially the country with the worst humans when it comes to leadership at all levels. A common school prefect taking 50 as aides so she could have much of the SUG funds to steal.”
ObaiGods remarked, “50 aides too much for SUG of institution.”
Dullale Abbas quipped, “By the time this one becomes a Governor, she’ll have 1 million appointees.”
