UNICAL’s first female SUG president, Blessing Alims, justified appointing 50 aides by emphasizing the need for effective governance and teamwork to manage the university’s large student population.

Blessing Alims, the first female Student Union Government (SUG) president of the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has offered an explanation for her decision to appoint 50 aides shortly after taking office.
The news sparked considerable discussion, leading Alims to address the concerns. In a statement released by her Press Secretary, Madueke Chinenye, Alims defended her decision, emphasizing the need for effective governance in a university with a student population exceeding 42,000, spread across 20 faculties and 110 departments.

“The Student Union Government is responsible for the welfare and development of our entire university community,” Alims explained. “Just as a single tree does not make a forest, managing such a large and diverse student body requires teamwork. A strong and varied team is essential to implement our initiatives effectively.”
She also pointed out that the roles are voluntary, with no financial remuneration, highlighting her commitment to assembling a team driven by shared values and dedication to the university’s progress.
“These positions are intended to promote career development and foster a sense of responsibility among the appointees. Each individual underwent a thorough screening process by the Senate Committee, took an Oath of Office, and is ready to contribute their talents and ideas to the administration,” she concluded.
