The University of Cape Coast’s governing council has reportedly terminated Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment, citing a breach of university statutes in the extension process, following legal challenges regarding his tenure extending beyond the statutory retirement age.

The University of Cape Coast’s governing council has reportedly terminated the appointment of Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong.
His initial four-year term, which began on August 1, 2020, was set to end on July 31, 2024. Despite a reported two-year extension, the council allegedly voided the extension, citing a breach of the university’s statutes regarding the renewal of the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment.
The council’s notice indicated that Boampong’s appointment could be extended, but no decision had been made yet, and he was urged to reapply if interested.
This development follows legal action taken by John Mevemeo, a resident of Millennium City-Kasoa, who challenged the extension on the grounds that it violated university statutes, as the renewal would have extended Boampong’s tenure beyond the statutory retirement age of 60, which he will be attaining on the 12th day of September 2025.
