A 300-level Computer Science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Kelvin Danlami, reportedly committed suicide after losing ₦600,000 entrusted to him to betting, with police confirming the incident and launching an investigation.


A 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly committed suicide after losing ₦600,000 to gambling. Danlami had allegedly used the money entrusted to him for betting, and his body was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room by one of his neighbours.
The incident has been confirmed by the Niger State Police Command, who stated that an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the cause of Danlami’s action. The police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, said the deceased was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
According to Abiodun, “On 19/1/26 at about 10.30am, information received indicated that in the early hours of the day, one Kelvin danlami, a student of IBBL, was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan”.
The Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution has also confirmed the incident, describing it as tragic. The SUG General Secretary, Aliyu Abubakar, extended condolences to Danlami’s family, friends, and the university community.
