Nnamdi Azikiwe University has suspended medical and security staff and dismissed a hostel supervisor following the death of a 100-level student, Isabella Ajana, who was allegedly denied timely access to insulin during a medical emergency due to a demand for payment.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has suspended several personnel following the tragic death of Miss Isabella Ajana, a 100-level Law student.
The suspension affects doctors, nurses, and security staff who were on duty at the university’s medical centre on the day Isabella died. This action was confirmed in a statement released on Sunday by the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi.
Background of the Incident
Isabella, a diabetic student residing in Elmada Hostel, reportedly died on July 8, 2025, after she was unable to access her insulin medication during a medical emergency. The delay was allegedly due to a demand for ₦120,000 by the hostel supervisor, identified as “Madam Bright”, before handing over a spare key to the room where the medication was kept.
Despite explaining the life-threatening nature of the situation, the students were allegedly denied access. Isabella’s condition deteriorated rapidly, and she was eventually rushed to the university hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Investigation and Actions Taken
Following public outrage and widespread condemnation, the university set up an investigative committee led by Prof. Mike Oddih. The panel submitted its findings within a week.
Based on the committee’s report, Prof. Arinze-Umobi announced the following:
- Three-month suspension for the medical and security staff on duty, pending completion of further investigations.
- Immediate dismissal of the Elmada Hostel supervisor who failed to release the spare key during the emergency.
- A review of the university’s partnership with Elmada Hostel, which is a privately managed facility within campus grounds.
Official Statement
Prof. Arinze-Umobi stated:
“Following the panel’s report, I have taken decisive actions to address the unfortunate death of Miss Isabella Chioma Ajana.
The medical personnel and security staff on duty that day are hereby suspended for three months in the first instance.
The supervisor responsible for withholding the spare key must be dismissed immediately. UNIZIK will also reassess its relationship with Elmada Hostel, demanding adherence to international best practices in student accommodation.
We remain committed to the highest standards of student care and safety. My condolences go to Isabella’s family and friends. We will take every necessary step to prevent such tragedies in the future.”
