A 300-level Sociology student of Bayero University Kano, Umar Abdullahi Hafizi, was fatally stabbed by phone snatchers in Dorayi Quarters, prompting widespread mourning, a police investigation, and renewed calls for improved security in Kano.

Tragedy struck in Dorayi Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area of Kano State, as a 300-level Sociology student of Bayero University Kano (BUK), Umar Abdullahi Hafizi, lost his life in a violent phone-snatching incident.
The heartbreaking event occurred around 11:00 p.m., when Umar was ambushed by unidentified assailants who stabbed him multiple times and made away with his mobile phone. Eyewitnesses say he was left bleeding on the street, and efforts to save him proved futile. He was confirmed dead shortly after the attack.
The university community has been thrown into mourning, with students and faculty expressing shock and grief over the incident. In an official statement, the Director of Public Affairs at BUK, Lamara Garba, described Umar as a promising young man and a dedicated student. “Umar’s death is a painful loss to the University community. He was well-regarded by both his peers and lecturers,” Garba said.
Although the crime happened off-campus, Bayero University has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement agencies to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Security agencies have reportedly launched a manhunt and called on the public to provide any information that could aid their investigation.
Umar’s body was transported to his hometown in Zaria, Kaduna State, where he was laid to rest according to Islamic rites. The funeral drew family members, friends, and fellow students, many of whom described him as quiet, humble, and studious.
In response to the incident, the university has urged all students to exercise extreme caution, especially when moving around at night. They also appealed to authorities to improve security in and around student-populated areas.
The killing has reignited public concern over the growing cases of phone snatching and violent street crimes in Kano and other urban areas in northern Nigeria. Many residents are now calling for more proactive policing and community safety initiatives to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
