“We No Go Gree” — NAUTH Nursing Students Protest Over School Fees Increase From ₦90,000 to ₦580,000

Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) School of Nursing in Nnewi staged a protest after the institution increased school fees from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000, a move the management says is part of plans to upgrade the school while students demand government intervention.

Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) School of Nursing in Nnewi staged a protest on Monday after the institution announced a sharp increase in school fees. According to reports, the fees were raised from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000 per academic session, a development that has sparked outrage among the students.

The protesting students described the hike as excessive and unfair, especially for those from low-income families. Many of them expressed concern that such a drastic increase could make nursing education inaccessible to several aspiring students who depend on affordable tuition.

In a memo dated January 23, 2026, the Chairman of the NAUTH Board of Nursing, Prof. O. I. Ejiofor, explained that the increase is part of plans to upgrade the institution into a reputable monotechnic. The directive reportedly applies to all students across different programmes, including Basic Nursing, Midwifery, and HND levels, and is expected to take effect immediately.

Despite the explanation from the school management, the decision has been met with criticism from students and parents who say the sudden financial burden is too heavy. Some observers also noted that similar fee increases across institutions in the Southeast are gradually turning higher education into something only a few can afford.

Several concerned individuals have called on the federal government to intervene by providing more funding and scholarship opportunities to support students. They warn that such steep increases could force many students to drop out of school if urgent action is not taken.
