Why I Aspire to Lead My Department – LASU’s 19-Year-Old Bakare Adeola Zainab shares

Bakare Adeola Zainab, a 19-year-old third-year philosophy student and current vice president of her department at Lagos State University, speaks on her aspiration and why she intend to run for the president of her faculty.

Bakare Adeola Zainab, a 19-year-old third-year philosophy student at Lagos State University (LASU), currently holds the position of vice president in her department. In an interview with Daily Trust, Zainab discussed her reasons for running for department president, her future goals, and how she plans to address challenges, emphasizing that being the only female candidate won’t hold her back.

Zainab is motivated by a desire to contribute to society and advocate for selfless leadership. She believes that true leaders focus on others’ needs rather than their own. Her goals include promoting academic excellence, organizing career workshops, and offering innovative grants to improve students’ experiences. Zainab aims to equip students for life after university, highlighting the importance of self-discovery and practical preparedness.

A major issue Zainab intends to tackle is the financial difficulty some students face in paying their tuition fees. She has already helped raise funds for students this semester and plans to continue these efforts if elected. She also aims to set up tutorials and provide resources to help students achieve academic success.

While Zainab humbly suggests she might not be the most qualified candidate, she believes she is the best fit for the role due to her leadership experience. She has been involved in various leadership programs and manages Cheebrace, a platform for creative expression. Zainab is also certified in broadcasting and fact-checking and serves as the youth president at her church.

As the sole female candidate, Zainab is determined to demonstrate her competence. She asserts that her gender should not be a barrier and points to her previous work, including successfully organizing a significant academic symposium, as evidence of her abilities. Zainab is confident that her achievements and vision will appeal to voters.

Zainab acknowledges the difficulty of balancing academic responsibilities with departmental duties. She relies on meticulous planning and scheduling to manage her time effectively and stay productive.

Zainab envisions workshops and other initiatives to help philosophy students prepare for various career paths. She believes that their philosophical training equips them with adaptable skills applicable in many fields. Her focus extends beyond academic excellence to include practical skills for post-university life.

Zainab anticipates that managing a diverse range of opinions and personalities will be one of the biggest challenges if she becomes president. However, she feels prepared to handle this with her strong leadership skills.

Zainab believes her proven competence and ability to deliver set her apart from other candidates. She has already demonstrated her capabilities by organizing a major symposium despite financial obstacles, successfully raising over a million naira for the event. Her innovation and determination are among the key attributes she offers.

In summary, Zainab is dedicated to making a positive impact on her department, with a strong focus on academic and personal development. She encourages her fellow students to support her candidacy, promising a leadership style characterized by competence and innovation.
