Wike Celebrates as Son Earns Master of Laws from UK University

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike celebrated his son Jordan’s Master of Laws degree from Queen Mary University of London, sparking mixed reactions online about public officials’ priorities and Nigeria’s education system.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has celebrated his son, Jordan Wike, for earning a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from Queen Mary University of London, UK.

Sharing his joy on his X handle (formerly Twitter), @GovWike, on January 7, Wike expressed pride in his son’s academic achievements, noting that he and his wife attended the graduation ceremony. He wrote, “Happy to witness, alongside my wife, the graduation ceremony of our son, Jordan, who just earned a Master of Laws (LLM) Degree at the Queen Mary University of London, UK. As a father, I am happy for the progress Jordan is making in the pursuit of his career.”

The announcement sparked mixed reactions online. While some congratulated Jordan and commended his accomplishments, others criticized Wike for sending his son abroad for education while allegedly failing to invest in local institutions during his tenure as governor of Rivers State.

One user, @YeleSowore, commented, “You were governor for eight years in Rivers State, one of Nigeria’s wealthiest states. You looted the state dry and couldn’t build a single school where your children could earn a Master’s in Law. What a crying shame!” Another, @Laycon30BG, said, “Congratulations to Jordan! It’s a joy for any parent to witness their children reaching new heights.”

Other reactions highlighted the contrast between Wike’s decision to educate his son abroad and the experiences of other Nigerians, with some recalling Wike’s recall of Rivers State-sponsored students studying abroad due to a lack of funds.

The achievement has reignited debates about the priorities of public officials and the state of Nigeria’s education system.
