Cursory: Gabriella Carter, a Jamaican-born entrepreneur, faced financial struggles but overcame them by applying to over 100 scholarships.

At the age of 22, Gabriella Carter, a Jamaican-born entrepreneur who moved to Florida with her family at 13, recently secured a $2 million scholarship to pursue studies at a university in the United States.
Despite her excellent academic performance and participation in athletics during high school, she faced financial struggles to cover college expenses.
Gabriella was determined to avoid student loans and achieve her dream of furthering her education after graduating from Miramar High School with a perfect 5.00 cumulative grade point.
Motivated by her desire to avoid student loans, Gabriella Carter began actively searching and applying for scholarships while still in high school. She recognized the potential of receiving financial support from people who believed in her and her dreams, leading her to apply to more than 100 different scholarship programs.
“Once I figured out that there’s free money out there that other people could give to me because they believed in me and my dreams so that I could go to school for free, I jumped on it and applied to every opportunity that I saw,” she said.
Despite the tiring process, Gabriella persevered and improved her application skills with each submission.
“The more scholarships I applied to, the better applications I was able to submit and ultimately have more success down the line,” she explained.
After facing 30 consecutive rejections, her determination paid off when she secured a $20,000 scholarship from Coca-Cola.
Throughout high school and college, Gabriella Carter managed to secure an impressive 35 scholarship awards, totaling over $2 million in cash.
One of these scholarships covered her entire college tuition, allowing her to graduate debt-free. After completing her undergraduate degree in Medical Anthropology with honors at Princeton University, Gabriella’s scholarship success caught the attention of her fellow students.
They reached out to her for advice on applying and obtaining scholarships, which inspired her to establish her own scholarship-focused firm called ‘Growing with Gabby.’
Gabriella’s remarkable achievements were recognized during a scholarship banquet at her high school, where she received numerous awards, sparking curiosity among others about her scholarship journey.
“We had our scholarship banquet at my high school, I had to get up at least 20 times to collect my different awards, that made people very curious about how I was able to have scholarship success,” she said.
Gabriella started her scholarship guidance firm, ‘Growing with Gabby,’ initially as an offline endeavor, but it later expanded into the digital realm.
Using social media, she responded to queries from her high school peers, which led to a broader audience.
While studying at Princeton, she rebranded her firm, establishing a presence on Instagram after being approached by a company for influencing.
Realizing the potential for earning through online platforms, she received $2,500 from a major retailer to promote a scholarship opportunity. This revelation motivated her to focus on offering valuable information.
“I didn’t even know people were really making money like that from posting online until I was approached with an opportunity from a major retailer and they paid me $2,500 to share about a scholarship opportunity that they had says, once that happened, I was like, ‘OK, I see the value in the information that I’m offering,” Gabriella said.
After graduating from Princeton, Gabriella worked as a marketing analyst, earning $90,000 annually.
However, she decided to quit the 9-to-6 job within a year to dedicate more time to her growing company.
In 2022, her scholarship business earned her $177,000, and she anticipates the earnings to increase to nearly $300,000 this year.
