The NYSC has resumed payment of the ₦77,000 monthly allowance arrears to former corps members after a two-month pause, fulfilling a federal promise to cover payments dating back to July 2024, though many still face financial strain due to high living costs.

After a two-month delay, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has resumed payments of arrears to former corps members, disbursing the newly approved ₦77,000 monthly allowance.
The latest disbursement, which began on Wednesday, September 3, 2025, marks the first since the previous payment was made on June 3, 2025. According to reports, the arrears cover the period from July 2024 to March 2025.
The allowance increase was first announced in September 2024 by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the 2024 Batch A Stream 2 being the first group to receive the higher stipend.
Confirming the latest payment, a former corps member—who chose to remain anonymous—said:
“After waiting for two months, I didn’t expect another alert. But honestly, it’s not just about the money; it’s about feeling like our efforts actually count.”
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, had earlier promised that both serving and recently discharged corps members would benefit from the allowance once funds were available.
“Once funds are released to us to offset the arrears, we will pay them. Even our corps members who passed out recently will benefit. We have their bank details,” Nafiu said at the 2025 Batch A Pre-Mobilisation Workshop in Abuja.
Despite the increase, many corps members still struggle with the high cost of living. Reports show that essential expenses—such as food, transport, and rent—consume nearly the entire allowance.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, also previously affirmed the government’s commitment to clearing the backlog and ensuring all eligible corps members receive the ₦77,000 monthly payment.
